Abstract

 Abstract

The research assessed attitudes of social welfare undergraduate students toward coping strategy of victims of repeaded physical violence against wives and its associated factors. Non-random sampling was applied to recruit social welfare students from 3 (three) public and private universities in East Java Province, West Java Province, and Yogyakarta Province. Data were collected through self-administered survey. The study showed that in general the students reported high support toward coping strategy that involved external intervention, especially families and religious leaders as well aspersonal focused coping by victims. In contrast, much lower agreement was reported toward coping strategy that involved legal approach. Attitudes toward gender roles was found to associate with greater support toward avoiding or cutting off relationships with perpetrator and accessing formal intervention. Having known the victim well associated with strategy to leave abusive perpetrator temporarily or permanently. On the contrary, attitudes toward gender roles was found to have positive association with the rejection of victims’ internal coping strategy. The level of religiosity had significant association with support for using intervention from informal institutions. Analysis and recommendations were discussed within the context of social work education role to promote sensitivity of students in protecting the victims of domestic violence.
